queue-jumping busses

ROBMOODBOX
One interesting part of the $3,000,000 project is the “bike/bus box” and the “queue jump” traffic lights that will give bus drivers and cyclists a head start.

On the other hand, the longer turning/acceleration lanes will increase the distance cyclists have to ride with fast traffic on both sides, something every bike rider hates.

The huge expansion of this intersection will benefit car-bound Sens fans heading to the strip’s bars after the game, rush hour cut-through traffic from Kanata and Stittsville, the DND brass, land speculators, and a lot of construction firms that finance our politicians. But is it good for Bells Corners?

It’s a rhetorical question, since it’s a done deal now – the Right to Move budget will be providing $1M and OC Transpo and other City departments will be kicking in the rest.

The library was closed for a couple of days while everything was reorganized (the kids’ section and the reference room switched places).

The Islamic Association of Ottawa, victims of repeated incidents of graffiti vandalism on the back of their building, are erecting a fence around their property. Can’t say I blame them.

I don’t expect too many Bells Corners business owners, apart from the usual clique, will show up at the private BIA meeting today. I asked a few small business owners on the strip if they were planning on attending, and their answers ranged from “what meeting?” to “are you kidding? I’m way too busy working.” I wonder if Alex will get asked the uncomfortable questions? Like where did all the money go?

The FREE Bike-taxi is no longer the strangest bike spotted in Bells Corners.

More damage from Hurricane Sandy – she blew one of Alex’s banners right off the pole.

  1. Dave Mc. says:

*sigh* all that money to “upgrade” an intersection that will not benefit residents of Bells Corners one iota, unless having to wait 1.5 minutes instead of 2.4 for the lights to cycle is a benefit.

And a construction mess to live through for a few months to boot!

Commuters rejoice! Bells Corners is here to serve you and make your driving experience a better one.
    *eyeroll*

  2. zebra says:

This construction will cost us millions and it’s not going to stop bike accidents.

People don’t give a damn about cyclists, especially the stupid ones.

  3. Jrffeey says:

How did this turn out? What are things like now?

    – For cyclists? The strip is one of Ottawa’s worst missing bike links.

Heading east on Baseline at Greenbank!

Nothing has changed since. Cycle tracks are planned for this section “sometime after 2031.”

But my “favourite” missing link is the strip in Bells Corners. Heading east, you have a bike lane to get through the ridiculously bloated Robertson/Moodie intersection, but it ends quickly and dumps cyclists into speeding traffic (mostly car commuters from exurban sprawl in Kanata and Stittsville using our main street as a throughway to work).
