a heavy blow to the ice

The people organizing the All-Star weekend aren’t the only ones gnashing their teeth at the freezing rain and snow that’s wrecking the ice – operators of Ottawa’s 246 outdoor rinks are also feeling the pain.

I talked to Al, the amazing guru of outdoor rink operators – he might have to bring some machinery in to deal the thick coat of heavy crud covering his beautiful ice. But he’s been doing outdoor rinks for a l-o-n-g time – this isn’t the first time that Mother Nature has dealt him a heavy blow.

Too bad for Bells Corners skaters – Westcliffe, pictured above, got a lot of use the past few days, as the ice was beautiful and the building was open. So congrats to Bruce, the guy in this Westcliffe rink video and everybody else in the WECA out flooding in the wee hours.

Lynwood finally opened – apparently yesterday the ice was good, even if there weren’t any nets and the building was closed (even if it’s listed as being open on the City site).

Meanwhile, at Lakeview, Al is getting more media attention after my curling photos got picked up by another blog – the CBC sniffed out the story and wants to interview him.
